Glass Jars

These last couple of weeks we have been helping my mother-in-law get her house ready to sell. My father-in-law was a collector of stuff or more accurately, a collector of trash. One of the things that has made this job difficult is that family heirlooms and other perfectly useful objects are mixed in with boxes of Styrofoam trays, old carpets, broken appliances from the 60’s, etc…

We’ve found treasured items along with useful items, as we wade through the mess. One of the delightful things my husband (Dean) found last week was a few boxes of glass jars, most of them giant peanut butter jars. Glass jars are very useful, especially a bunch of big ones. First glance at the jars and I knew they had potential. Dean looked at the jars and was a little disturbed at how much peanut butter his family had eaten. I suspect, they had probably been sitting in the barn for a decade or two, so cleaning them was a bit of a chore. However, the end result was well worth it.

My goal is to eliminate as much plastic in my house as possible and these jars bring me another step closer to my goal. I have grown up with plastics all of my life. I would even say it’s hard for me to imagine living without plastics. There are things I don’t know how to do and conveniences that I would miss without plastics. I have grown up in a world of plastic bins, containers, trays and baggies. How do I organize without plastics?

One of the many answers to that question lies in these glass jars. They are neat, tidy and even pretty to look at (plastic bins are rarely pretty). They are a practical solution for storing small items.
